GAMBLING ADDICTION

How do you know if you have an addiction to gambling?
Gambling addiction occurs when an individual finds that they are unable to control their gambling. They must place that one last bet!

This addiction is also referred to as compulsive gambling. In clinical terms, a compulsive gambler is one who has the urge to gamble despite the harmful and negative consequences of their gambling activities. Compulsive gambling is a progressive addiction and causes disruptions in every major area of your life: psychological, physical, financial and social.

One sign that you or a loved one has a serious gambling problem is that you or they need to bet more money more frequently with the intention of winning back losses. This is otherwise known as “chasing your losses”.

The most difficult aspect in treating the compulsive gambler is getting the person to recognize the extent of the problem. Overcoming denial is extremely difficult. However, with counseling and other professional resources, it can be done. Over time, a gambling addiction can be brought under control.
